Cruising Carolina:
The Lower Banks
is made possible by
the following underwriters:
Put on your boat shoes, slather on the sunscreen, and sit back to enjoy the
newly released DVD version of Cruising Carolina: The Lower Banks as
seen
on UNC-TV, North Carolina's statewide public television network. Host
Claiborne Young takes you to
Oriental, the "sailing capital" of North
Carolina where boats outnumber people three to one; remote
Okracoke
Island
, reachable only by an hours-long ride on a boat or ferry; and New
Bern,
the home of an 18th century palace on the water.

In this newest episode, we also explore the natural beauty of the
Cape
Lookout National Seashore,
and explore the touching history of one
family's old beach cottage there, which is the centerpiece of bittersweet
memories spanning eight decades.  The haunting tale of the ghost village
on
Portsmouth Island is another stop along the way, plus a look at the
efforts to protect the wild horses of
Shackleford Banks.

Cruising Carolina: The Lower Banks also explores the traditional craft of
wooden decoy carving on
Harkers Island.  There you'll also meet a family
that's keeping alive the heritage of wooden boat building.  We travel to
Beaufort and Morehead City, where maritime traditions are perfectly
blended with the natural beauty of casual waterfront living.  This episode
also takes you to the
Bogue Banks, the home of incredible beaches, and
a key part of our state's Civil War history.
